  1. After being hired for a full-time teaching position, apply to the Idaho State Department of Education for the ABCTE Interim Certificate (valid 3 years).
    • A few additional requirements may be noted on the Interim Certificate, but these are state requirements enforced for all new teachers.
  2. Complete the Idaho State Board of Education-approved mentor program (a two-year program) within your first three years in the classroom.
    • Again, the mentor program is for all new teachers. Effective mentor programs have been proven to help new teachers be more successful.
  3. Upon completion of all requirements including those listed on the Interim Certificate, apply for the Idaho State Department of Education five-year renewable Idaho Certificate.
    • Congrats, you’re now a fully licensed Idaho teacher!

“My name is Brent; I teach in Idaho.  I am starting my 6th year of teaching at our local high school where I teach Government, Street Law, Debate and Drama. Additionally, I am the Drama and Debate coach. I love teaching high school! I decided to obtain my certificate in the ABCTE program because it allowed for me to rely on my life experiences outside of the classroom which has allowed me to augment my teaching with my past and current experiences. The students enjoy hearing about my past experiences as a lawyer and my current experiences as mayor of our town.”
